The Tech Inventors: Zack and Dylan

“Dylan met his friend Zack freshman year. Zack’s dad was a university professor turned administrator, and his mom ran the children’s youth group at the church we’d attended when the boys were younger (St. Phillips Lutheran Church). Zack was friendly and outgoing, with a stocky build, a round face, and short brown hair. His house was ground zero for all kinds of zany activity—someone always seemed to be barbecuing or going boating or throwing a pool party—and Dylan spent a lot of time there. I was especially pleased by Dylan’s friendship with Zack, because of how gregarious and outgoing Zack was. He didn’t mind being the center of attention, which drew Dylan out a little.

Both Zack and Dylan were interested in technology. One summer, they hit rummage sales in Zack’s neighborhood for old telephone equipment, determined to build a portable telephone system. (This was before cell phones.) The boys were proud of the contraption they came up with—an old telephone bolted to a sprung suitcase—and they got it working well enough to cause some static on the phone system in our house.”  – Sue Klebold, ‘A Mother’s Reckoning’

—-

This appears to be Dylan’s Black Box hookup phone invention. Although we cannot be certain that this is what the two kindred best friends collaborated on, it sure looks like a match in regards to phone and speaker related parts and equipment needed to complete the project. Dylan seems to be very good at figuring out electronic technical inventions for either creative project or destructive ones, such as the Napalm gun weapon he designed for NBK.  I believe Dylan’s strongest contribution to NBK was his natural talent and inclination for technical-engineering type inventions.

“The runes have shown it…”

There’s a particular line in this journal entry of Dylan’s that’s
always intrigued me, but I haven’t been able to find further explanation – factual or speculative – online or otherwise (if something is out there and I’ve missed it, my apologies and please send it my way!).

Written three days after he and Eric were arrested for breaking into a
van, Dylan doesn’t directly discuss the incident, but his angst is palpable.
There’s an indirect allusion in his opening line – “well well… so much changes”
a more direct reference when he talks about being caught for “most of my
crimes”
, and his rage about society trying to destroy what is superior could be
another reference to his arrest.

But most of the entry focuses on both his desire to be with his love,
and his desperation to end it all. Fate is evoked twice. About halfway through, he talks of suicide if the girl he loved didn’t love him “by fate’s
choice”
.

But it’s the first, subtler hint of Dylan’s belief in fate that’s more mysterious.

“I understand almost everything now… so close to my love – [redacted].
The runes have shown it, she has shown it, i have felt it.”

What is Dylan talking about when he mentions runes? Runes are the
letters that form alphabets in a range of Germanic languages, often linked with
Scandinavia and Vikings, but they’ve also long been used as tools of magic or
divination – as a way to foretell the future. Some believe they were used as
magical signs before they evolved into writing tools. In fact, the very meaning
of the word ‘rune’ is “secret,
or something hidden”
. In early modern times, folklore related to runes can be seen in Icelandic magical staves preserved in grimoires (magic textbooks) from the 17th century on.

Austrian occulist Guido von List connected a branch of runic magic to Germanic mysticism in
the early 20th century with his book The Secret of the Runes. Von List’s theories would eventually inspire Nazis to use runes in their symbolism – the SS
unit insignia shows two Sig Runes, as one example.

Around the early 1980s, runic magic and divination became semi-popular (you know, as popular as anything esoteric can be) through a variety of neo-paganism guidebooks. Ralph Blum’s 1982 publication, The Book of Runes: A Handbook
for the Use of an Ancient Oracle
, has been credited with introducing modern readers to the method of using runes to answer personal life questions. Blum went on to write more
books on runic magic, and other authors helped contribute to the
trend. From 1996-1998, Blum published several books on runic magic in quick
succession, and started including images of the runes printed on card stock,
rather than traditional rune stones.

Runes have appeared in pop culture relevant to Dylan. German industrial
metal band Rammstein
incorporated what looks like the ‘Raido’ rune
against an Iron Cross into
their famous logo (… or it could just be an ‘R’ ;)). The computer games Quake and Doom, both of which Dylan played, feature magic runes that players need to collect to ascend to the next level or attain a bonus.

We know how important symbology was to Dylan. Even a cursory look at his journal reveals his patented ever-lasting contrast symbol, downward spiral sketches, his fixation with
and drawing of the number 5, and various lost highway drawings.

image
image

Other symbols he
drew include the Ancient Egyptian ankh hieroglyphic, which symbolises life, the
infinity symbol, and a
barbed wheel
.

image

This final symbol is especially interesting in the context of this
post. Dylan used it to represent ‘fate’, as seen in this excerpt from his
journal (one of several examples):

image

… The thing i have concluded is that [fate] will decide when we should be together. [fate] decided when our existence started, it should end the same way with us…

Why is this symbol so interesting? Because it bears a striking
resemblance to a Vegvísir:
one of those previously mentioned Icelandic magical staves. The Vegvísir is meant to help guide people
through rough weather – a compass of sorts, but more like a runic talisman. It’s a
symbol of spiritual guidance and protection. Icelandic singer/songwriter Björk – who made the big
time in the 1990s – has
a Vegvísir tattoo on her upper left arm
.

image

A Vegvísir

We can’t know for sure if Dylan ever saw a Vegvísir, but the similarity
to his own symbol for fate is striking. The fact that it has a different
significance is irrelevant; much as Dylan liked instrumental music because he
could create his own meanings for songs, he likely preferred to attribute his
own meanings to signs that caught his eye.

Given runes’ connections to Nazi symbolism, Rammstein, Quake and Doom, plus their connotations with fate and magic – it’s not unlikely that Dylan was aware of them and attracted to them as a way to understand his
existence. Did he own a set of rune stones or cards that he used as a divination tool? Or maybe use some mid-late ’90s online rune reading service to see whether the one he believed was his
love was true?

Fun little addition: Dyl’s patented personal rune (or maybe it’s just the Golden Arches) 😉

Very interesting read!  I’ve been pondering Dylan’s ‘the runes have shown it’ reference for quite some time. I’ve gone back and forth in my mind -as you’ve so aptly done here exploring possible options – as to what sort of ‘runes’ he meant – whether Dylan would’ve actually, somehow, acquired Runic prophecy stones and dabbled/messed around with them occasionally or not and counter that those would be quite a serious investment for him- and, wouldn’t we have heard him referencing them again in later writings?  But Dylan, tight on cash teenager that he was, seems somehow more simple in his brand of spirituality and mysticism. He wouldn’t need such trappings as tarot cards or rune stones – or would he?  It is entirely conceivable he went to a nineties runic website that you’d linked. I always tend to conclude feeling-wise that Dyl was referring to the gaming runes integrated into especially Quake, Hexen or maaaybe Doom. And so while he was playing the game at a particular point, those runes had aligned in a favorable manner, and he took that as sign from ‘Fate’ (along with his perception that ‘she has shone it’ ) that it was written in the stars for them to be together.  It’s similar to how he interpreted other ordinary things around him into ‘magical thinking’ in his life as ‘signs from above’ such as “the weather is a replication of our thoughts’.   He also could have fashioned his own runes too but here again, wouldn’t we have seen the evidence for it.  So, no.

Then again: Hm.. there is one other clue in his writings which makes me still heavily consider that Dylan did possibly have some actual rune stones handy or perhaps crafted his own.  But ah, that’s another post – haha. 🙂  I would rather showcase your beautiful post with fine research and not digress into more pondering about The Ponderer. 🙂

Btw, that ‘patented personal rune’ or supposed Golden Arches you reblogged at the bottom is actually the tip-end of his pointed Double Barrelled Shotgun or BFG (BIg Fuckin’ Gun).  😉  Gotta love the ingenuity of our at-first-glance, personal interpretations. Initially, I thought it was a Trident. lol
Great INFP minds think alike! 🙂

What do you think did Eric and Dylan think about the millennium bug?

Y2K bug, also called Year 2000 bug or Millennium Bug, was a problem in the coding of computerized systems that was projected to create havoc in computers and computer networks around the world at the beginning of the year 2000.  This has been asked before a couple of times under the search keyword ‘Y2K’ where I answered how Dylan might’ve viewed the supposed impending doom. I honestly don’t think Eric would give a shit either as he knew he wouldn’t be here for it..and even if he was: he’d probably like the idea of The (computer) System being fucked up and ‘ripped’ at the very stroke of midnight Jan 1, 2000.  The chaos and breakdown of human society in some form or another could only be a good thing.  How’s that for two Indigo Children? 😉

By the way, if you were the anon that asked this question before in another manner: we have no written evidence of what the two thought about it.

What’s the best documentary out about the shooting? I searched documentary using the search But it only came back Zero Hour, which you don’t seem to like too much (though I do agree it’s a good starting point)

Hmm.. Where I’m at right now with my extensive research, I don’t feel like we have a ‘best documentary’ in terms of accuracy and being unbiased in so far as discussing the boys and portraying realistically how it happened.  I will concede that Zero Hour is probably the best place to start to get an overall gist of Columbine. However, it’s not super accurate (when you’ve researched enough the glaring mistakes are apparent. i.e. for one: ‘Dylan’ didn’t shoot Dave Sanders). Plus, it’s a docu-drama that tends to glamorize and pretty-up the event and those boys perhaps a bit too much.  I think some people are attracted to watching it over and over again because it’s, well, filmed just a bit too attractively. 😉 The boys look slick in their uniforms and trenchcoats; they are uber cool and In Charge while taking over their school. Lots of relished close-ups of the ‘gun porn’ ala weapons raised while slaughtering victims outside and in the library. You are kind of with ‘Eric’ and ‘Dylan’ as they go around murdering their classmates.  I mean, you may as well be the Third Shooter as the audience.  For those that have their own personal revenge fantasies about their own schools, bullying issues, it’s a bit of a vicarious thrill and not so much about the education of the tragedy and the case.   And hmm..I’m not really sure how else they could’ve filmed that without us going along for the ride of such a heinous act since the documentary is hinged on the boys, their motivations, and how they carried out going ‘Columbine’ on their school.  It’s a tricky thing to pull off a documentary on the two, showing it realistically and true to the facts while remaining neutral and not bordering on glorifying.  All I know is that I haven’t seen ‘the best’ yet.  We may never get one either. :-/

That said, here is my review list of documentaries and books.

Just Dylan and Eric’s hometown it sounded like a judgmental town but was it like that in general in the 90’s or was it just that town?

Littleton was a very sheltered white bread suburban community with very little diversity and a lot of religious element to it.  So, yes, it was the ‘town’ – however, there are a lot of similar exclusive, narrow-minded small towns or suburban populaces like this in the US depending on where you go. And then there is the south which is a mishmash culture of southern hospitality combined with old world values, heavy on Christianity, much ignorance, and backwardness that makes it a very rigid, judgemental region as a whole.  But Littleton, CO is the Central US and it still is very homogenized whitebread, Christian community through the culture may have progressed marginally since the nineties.

This is kind of a dumb question that may have been asked, but during the time of the massacre were there any state testings going on since it was April? Like Finals?

Oh, absolutely. This was the time period for testing and finals, etc.  If you look at CHS’s April 2017 calendar there was PSAT/SAT Assessment testing on April 11th.  Eric didn’t show up for his Chinese Philosophy final exam on April 20th..for obvious reasons. That was a crucial test that would make or break his grade, and ironically Brooks berated Eric for not showing up.

I just wanted to apologize to you. I asked the homeschool question yesterday and I did search for “home school’ and “homeschool” but it didn’t occur to me to use the ed suffix. Thanks for posting your previous response and again, I’m sorry for wasting your time. Have a great day!

Oh, no need to apologize at all. 🙂 Let’s blame that on the search tool because it didn’t see your search even though both ‘home’ and ‘school’ were your search keywords. 😉 So, I went a head and added both ‘home school’ and ‘homeschool’ in hopes that the search tool will pick up any of those the next time people search for it. So, no time wasted at all – just allowed me to fine tune things a bit. 🙂  Hey, you have a great day too!

Do you honestly think dylan would be homophobic if he would’ve been born to the 20th century?

I honestly don’t think Dylan was homophobic as an individual. However, in the environment he hung out in, there was hyper-masculine peer pressure to act as such while hanging with dude friends.  Another layer to that is that the Christian culture in Littleton frowned upon homosexuality in general. It may not be a bad as it was in the nineties but it’s still a hangup for super religious folks that reside there.

I know he’s the god of sadness but I’ve always wondered why does Dylan look so unhappy when he appears at the end of the Eric in columbine video, your thoughts?

My feeling about it is that Dylan wears a rather sullen, sulky expression as he lethargically saunters over to greet Eric and Mike. Not necessarily looking ‘sad’ but more like unhappy, and wishing he were anywhere else but here. It’s possible as he was waiting for his friends in the “Tech Lab’ (aka video production class) and he overheard or saw something in the classroom with certain individuals that annoyed him.  So, it’s like we’re seeing the tail end of his dissatisfaction waiting alone and then finally his friends arrive to rescue him from enduring the stupid shit. I do believe you can hear him comment “pathetic” in an acerbic tone just as Mike V walks by.  But Dylan appears focused on Eric behind the camera lens and not on Mike walking by. Eric and Dylan were not in the same video production class in the second semester of their senior year but this video was filmed earlier. The two may have had video class together back then. However, often when they had separate vid classes each would come to visit the other at the start of class. It’s difficult to say because we don’t have as many of Dylan’s class schedules as we do for Eric.

Fun fact: I visited the Tech Lab and filmed inside the glass window on the door. 🙂

Do you know where i can listen to A mothers reckoning, audio for free anywhere? i really want the book but im broke lol :( plus, i would love to hear the audio of sue reading her book. as sad as it is.

I won’t personally offer Sue’s book in any form for free because the proceeds go to mental health organizations for research.  So, it’s important that people purchase her book because they are helping her with their contribution. You get; you give: You get to read her book and you give money to help her cause. 🙂  And tbh, the hard/softbound book/audio book has been out for a while now and so the price has been reduced over time.  If you’re working a job or doing chores for cash, you can put away a couple of dollars each week rather than spending $4-5 on that Starbucks frappucino. 😉

If you want to listen to Sue’s audiobook free of charge, your best bet would be to risk signing up for Audibles free 30-day trial in which you can listen to any book for free within the trial period and then you’d cancel the trial before being billed.

I love reading little, irrelevant facts about Dylan. Do you have any for me to read over because they literally make my day a little bit more bearable! Thank you ☺️ even ones that everyone knows about, I love being reminded of how he loves Dr Pepper and that he owned that infamous koala bear 🐨

Sure! Here’s one for you:

When Nate Dykeman slept over, the boys would stay up late cooking or baking recipes from late-night cooking shows.

You can just picture these two Master Chefs in the kitchen at 12:30-1 am trying their hand at whipping up some concoction and either succeeding or totally flopping..and of course, all that joking around that went on, imitating the cooking show hosts (and their mannerisms and accents),  having dish towel fights, or pizza dough tossing contests…  *sigh*

I think that little anecdote should sufficiently brighten your day. 🙂  I know it did mine.  😉
