Yes. Dylan and Eric wore there sunglasses initially outside when the shooting began but I think they removed them fairly soon into NBK. Dylan left his on longer I think because he was hell pressed for that ‘bad ass all in black’ aesthetic with his trench and sun glasses. Whereas Eric peeled off his trench pretty quickly and left it on the outside grounds and so too, was probably annoyed with the sunglasses hindering his clear line of vision during his gung ho target practice. I think Dylan took his sunglasses off shortly after heading down the steps just outside of the commons because some witnesses, like Vennessa Grimes, claimed to have made eye contact with him.

Is it me or does Dylan Klebold look ENTIRELY different from his freshman, sophomore, and junior pics to his senior pic? He looks completely different that he seems unrecognizable! Is it just me? I saw a photo of how he looked in a yearbook in his junior year. He looks completely different. Am I the only one who notices this?
Yes, he does look vastly different from year-to-year. It’s almost like Dylan’s a completely different person each year, you could say? His hair texture seems to look curly-bushy in his Freshman and Junior years but much smoother in other years. Might be due to constant hand fussing and a bit of smoothing product. He looks awkward and timid in his Freshman year but seemingly confident and almost bordering on preppy by his Sophomore year. Somewhere in between Sophomore year and Junior year things began to change inside him undetected. And his face almost shows that transition in his eyes. He looks far more wide-eyed and open as a Sophomore but more wised-up and slightly cocky by his Junior year. Senior year, he is just giving mom and dad their model, genteel, perfect son with the salon styled hair as a going away present (I’m sure he absolutely hated that pretentious photo session with the scenic backdrop and special occasion clothing he would not wear on a daily basis but mom highly approves of.). Yes,sure, on one hand, it’s just a natural growth spurt that boys go through each year but then again, you could almost say it’s a metamorphosis, a transformation of some kind that he undergoes.

did eric and dylan have cell phones
The boys did not have cell phones. The phone that Eric is spinning around at the caferia table in Columbine belongs to Mike V. Pagers were the standard big thing back in the ‘90s. From the early nineties onward, cell phones began to get more compact and by the late nineties, it was considered cool if you had a flip phone with a (largerly useless) antenna that could be pulled out. The phone networks were still pretty lousy back then with a lot of dropped calls. Generally parents had cell phones along with that monthly cell phone bill and high school teenagers were lucky if their parents also bought them one too. Though, at Columbine and surrounding Littleton, I’m sure a lot the richie, spoiled classmates had more cell phones than most kids did cross country. Dylan and Eric would’ve likely assumed most of their peers with cell phone as spoiled brats. They were those lucky kids that had everything handed over to them on a silver platter. The boys looked as those lucky bastards with a air of distain because they had parents not only buying them a phone but also paying their monthly cell phone bill. Meanwhile, Dylan and Eric’s parents were making sure they both paid their monthly auto insurance bill which likely took a good chunk out of their paychecks. So, nope, no cell phones. Pagers with their special call numbers were it for the boys.
Did Dylan (and Eric too for that matter) wear cologne? I always wondered what both boys smelled like. I had a boyfriend who smoked, and I loved his scent mix of cigarettes and cologne. I have to ponder if the boys hated cologne, or if they did wear some & what brand they would have possibly liked?
This was asked before: Sex and Candy
As for Cologne, I’d say that be an overall no in practice. Especially a NO for Dylan. Too status-y and pretentious And, for the most part, too pretty-boy prissy for Eric, though idk why, I somehow see Eric using a splash of something like, say, Cool Water by Davidoff but only before going on a date to make a good impression on girls.
Hello, your blog is great. Can you explain what is all that of Dylan weight loss?
Dylan at 6′3 lost 37 pounds leading up to the Columbine massacre.
10/16/97 (drivers license) – 1/31/98 (after van theft) – 180 lbs
4/22/99 (autopsy report) 143 lbs

Glad you enjoy E-C, thanks. 🙂
Do you think if Dylan was homeschooled, would his life and mental health have been better? Or was his depression more deep rooted and was bound to happen?
That’s a very interesting question! I think Dylan would have definitely been more intellectually engaged with homeschooling in which subjects could be elevated to a level that would be challenging and interesting enough to hold his attention. Part of the problem with public school is that cookie cutter curriculum which is geared towards the median average for each grade. Dylan was gifted and surpassed the level of your average Columbine student. So, he was way under challenged and pretty much bored with the way subjects were so uninspiringly taught.
Everything must have seemed so plodding and easy. He’d finish reading assignments weeks before the report was due, he was so disengaged from subjects being taught which he already knew, so he’d goof off. He’d procrastinate to the last minute on completing calculus homework, read other books not class-related and got in trouble for it or just nodded off from sheer boredom..and, well, also from staying up too late playing Quake with Zack then stumbling out of bed at 5 am for morning bowling.
Homeschooling might have been a way to educate Dylan in an unconventional manner so that it would keep him engaged, interested and so. motivated enough to work that much harder because he was getting something out of it personally. As a result of that, his better grades would just be the icing the cake. Though, this style of education is quite a commitment for parents. Dylan’s parents worked full-time: his dad worked real estate from home and his mom at the local community college miles away. There would need to be sacrifices made on either or both of his parent’s part to be present and involved along side their son, to be mutually engaged in his academics whether it be through online learning programs or some combination method. They would also have to brush up on subjects they were perhaps rusty on and know enough themselves in a variety of subjects so they could be primed for the task of working with him each step of the way and also a couple steps in front of him which would be no easy feat. Optionally, they might have been able to acquire a homeschooling tutor for Dylan if that was a financial possibility. These days, you can do the entire classroom thing online with various instructors that keep in touch and closely connected with parents to monitor their kids educational progress. However, I’m going to say that online education options were likely much more limited if not non-existent in the nineties.
While, homeschooling might have kept Dylan more stimulated, engaged and much more intellectually satisfied, the drawback would be that it would keep him within a sheltered environment of the homestead. In CHIPS, Dylan was interacting with a bunch of kids much like himself, with that commonality of being gifted, however, being home schooled would mean he’d have well, pretty much no one to relate to or compare notes with. Again, with the online learning now, it’s very effortless to interact online with other students but again online interaction is just not quite the same thing as being in the company of other people. Schooled at home, Dylan could completely bypass the risk factor of exposure to any toxic bullying that is the regularly hazing in the social hierarchy of your average public middle/high school. In theory, not dealing with bullying might have helped to keep his self esteem higher for not having to experience the sense of being ostracized or degraded socially by snobs, jocks and such. Given that Dylan was shy and sensitive from a very early age yet not having the opportunity to experience much of any social experiences, the good as well as the bad, come cause him to become more socially stunted and inept.
Homeschooling would absolutely have to provide the opportunity of field trips – small ones to museums or historical locations or even cross-country for some subject he was researching. This would give Dylan the opportunity to expand his universe and broaden his horizons while being given opportunity to interact with people within the realm of his learning so not only is their an intellectual learning process but also a connection with others being made. Both combined would’ve really helped him soar on many levels.
Dylan might have been happier and more comfortable avoiding experiences that would expose him to both positive and negative social anxiety reactions – and yet, I think part of what made him so depressed was that sense of isolation from the world and feeling separate from people in general. Just think of his large, uniquely-unusual home which is very sequestered away from the close-knit neighborhoods/communities of his friends and classmates. It symbolically represents how physically separated and distanced he was on many levels in his existence.
Ultimately, unfortunately, I tend to think that the type of homeschooling available to Dylan back then have him cooped up at home that much more and staying in his little bubble of his bedroom even more than he already did after his day in a public school setting. Being home constantly equates to not being exposed to as many potential friends his own age to share commonalities with or the opportunity to learn socialization period. So, he might have receded into deeper shyness with even more insecurity around people because of having less experience with them. Homeschooling would make him feel academically confident and quite intellectually capable as evinced by his consistently high AP grades. Unlike at Columbine, where he was struggling with C’s and D’s, he would feel more superior in his performance and more in control of all that realm.
As for the rest, the building of social skills and emotional intelligence would suffer as a result of schooling individually at his parents or a tutors side. So, the more isolated Dylan would become in a home-schooled environment, it would seem that he might be even more inclined towards chronic, deep depression take a foothold on him. I tend to think, too, that Dylan had some sort of genetic disposition, somewhere along his family lineage, for depression. Though, homeschooling seems like it might be the perfect solution to circumvent Dylan’s exposure to unpleasant experiences at run-of-the-mill public schooling, ironically, it seems an individual-based schooling method might possibly have only exacerbate his tendency toward depression by underscoring his sense of loneliness and the lack of opportunities for building human connection.
Was Dylan a follower? Did he just get caught up with Eric’s plan like Dave Cullen said?
Short answer: Yes, Dylan could be a follower. That is undeniable. There are plenty of friends, associates and classmate accounts that perceived him to behave as though he followed along at times. Did he get caught up in Eric’s plan as Cullen insists? Nope. Dylan chose to do NBK of his own volition and also for his own reasons. Similar to Eric’s justifications and motivations but not entirely parallel to Eric’s by a long shot. On the morning of 4/20, when the two were videoing their last basement tape 30 min prior to the shooting – which boy was snapping his fingers at the other to hurry up and finish his slightly reluctant goodbye? That was Dylan, wanting Eric to get a move on, so he could begin the day of his end.
Are there any transcripts of the videos they made? I have bad hearing. It is ok if there isn’t :) I am just curious.
Radioactive Clothing transcript
I’ll add to this post if I locate any additional transcripts.
I am wondering about something, when Dylan was fired, I assume his parents found out, because suddenly he was going to work anymore. But that would have meant he had to tell them why he was fired(because of something with a pipe bomb at work right?) but wouldn’t his parents have been curious/worried if they found out there son had brought a pipe bomb to work, and where he got it from? :)
Dylan wasn’t actually fired from Blackjack for bringing the pipe bomb in for show and tell, he quit that week. He was steamed about it. Plus, he wanted to work a computer job and probably felt he could get better pay elsewhere.
Kristen T was not Dylan’s dream girl. His dream girl had 10 letters in her name. Marla Foust fits this perfect. M-a-r-l-a-F-o-u-s-t. She associated with many people from the TCM, and Devon was also good friends with her (probably how Dylan knows her).
Both Marla Foust and Kristen Theibault might potentially be one of several of Dylan’s dream girls. Dylan referenced different girls throughout the course of the two years he wrote his journal and appeared to be changing his mind as he went. At some point, he flat out mentions he’s not sure who She could be and eventually, he decides he will leave that up to Fate to decide for him.
Near the beginning of his journal in ‘97, Kristen Theibault seemed to potentially be a possible candidate because of the clue Dylan mentions about this particular girl in his June ‘97 entry in which he feels he’s in love for the very first time: “such a strange name, like mine” he clues us in. Basically, the last name ‘Theibault’ pronounces uncannily like ‘Klebold’. Plus, Kristen not only have friends in the TCM, she was part of the original TCM and Dylan knew and crossed paths with her friends. See my post on Kristen Theibault here.
Dylan’s ten letter Acrostic love poem was written later on in his journal at a time when his true love was now intended for a girl with ten letters in her name. The popular theory, of course, is Marla Foust. This theory seemed almost a given when dutch author, Tim Krabbe. decided to complete the acrostic poem using the letters of Marla’s full name and speculating words that would fill in the blanks to each of Dylan’s paragraphs that seemed to fit the poem in a meaningful way. The thing is, you can make pretty much take any name with ten letters and think up words to fit the poem if you work hard enough and have fun playing Dylan with it. Ultimately, just because we can make it fit, does not mean that it’s the exact name that Dylan intended nor the exact wording but simply our own speculation and conjecture. See post here
Kristen was a Junior in 1999
Marla was a Sophomore in 1999
Dylan wrote the “My First Love???” journal entry in July of 1997. This would’ve been summer vacation before his Junior year.
This would place Marla right before her Freshman year at CHS. She would’ve have started at Columbine for another month yet.
The only other thing that might have linked the two of them is going to the same church recs together which he mentions only on one occasion in his journal that the ‘rec was fun’ and it looks like he mentions “Mara” in Nov ‘97. Perhaps a misspelling of her name as he didn’t know her that well yet?
Yet, when it comes to Dylan’s unsent love letter, he writes: “I was in a class with you first semester, & was blessed with being with you in a report… This semester I rarely see you.”
It would seem this couldn’t be the same girl as Marla who as a sophomore likely wouldn’t be paired up in a class with a senior. The only class that had mixed grades was P.E.
The post “Maybe Marla” is here.
Like Kristen, Marla was also associated with the TCM and had friends as part of that connection. However, Kristen was part of the original TCM and good friends with initial members like Joe Stair, Chris Morris and Tad Boles. I do not think Marla was ‘good friends’ with Devon because in her account she mentions that “Devon Adam’s is the ex girlfriend of Dylan” – which to me, amounts to her not really knowing Devon that well at all. They were probably somewhat friends based on the the fact that both their friends mixed in connections with the TCM.
burnandraveatcloseofday did a brilliant post using logic and filtering out all CHS females from each grade that had a 10 letter name that might be potential candidates. This method of deduction had really never been attempted before so I was actually kinda thrilled to see someone tackle Dylan’s greatest enigma by using a process of elimination rather than just drawing conclusions based off witness accounts. See post here
They speculated that Dylan’s girl could’ve also been Erin Boortz, a Senior who had 10 letters in her name. This blogger played around with the acrostic love poem and easily made Erin’s name fit into the poem just as Tim Krabbe had done with Marla’s name. See post here I’m not really sure about Erin Boortz On one hand, I do not even think that she and Dylan would share the same circle of friends but on the other, oddly there is virtually no testimony in the 11k account from Erin. Which makes it a bit fishy? A plus for Erin is that she is also in her Senior year like Dylan in ‘99. She could match his unsent love letter where he felt blessed to be working on a report with her first semester.
At any rate, I do agree with you that Marla might yet be Dylan’s dream girl but I also think that within the context of Dylan’s entire two years worth of journaling that she is but one of many contenders for his Dream Girl. Keep in mind, sometimes even Dylan himself didn’t know who She was.. He was frustrated to no end in not knowing who she could be. At a certain point, he simply decided to leave it up to Fate to decide for him. If she couldn’t be revealed in life then she would be made known in his death/rebirth into the Halcyons.
We may just keep on perpetually guessing the answer to this riddle and Dylan just might like the idea that we are constantly in the state of being that ever ‘ponderer’ over the revelation of the identity of his True Love. 😏
you know in nate’s yearbook how Dylan wrote the “kill puffy” shit like that. What does that mean?

CHICO’s GROVE
sup man… Bust da surfboards, pacon the beach bitchez…
Nate was heading to Florida after graduation.. Yeah, dude, like, totally.
Surfs up.
Sir I want the TV! hehehe
j/k i’ll get it another time
(draws a key) hehehe
Me thinks Dyl was planning to steal a TV from out of the CHS computer room because.. he has the keys! Might have joked around with Nate over the idea of nabbing the TV for his bedroom.

I am the GOD of the MP3′s !!
You’ll never beat me
Dylan has downloaded the most MP3′s probably off an FTP search engine or file sharing download site such as RIO or AudioGalaxy – pre Napster which came out in June ‘99 and was controversial because people were downloading music for free illegally and not giving a shit.
Albertsons’s was funny hehehe
Dylan worked at Albertson’s grocery store as a customer service clerk for a short time – can you imagine? 😉
DIE Connie !!!
I will put refried beans in the toilet
and rotten eggs everywhere!!

Dyl pranks a much disliked manager while working there and probably as his

Anyhow, that’s Dyl’s very upbeat, jovial last yearbook signing message to Nate. 🙂
Can you post the link to the video where Dylan and Brooks are in the theatre
That would be the Frankenstein Roast video. Brooks played Frankenstein’s monster, Dylan did sound and collaborated on FX with Brooks and Zack did lighting for that production which I believe took place fall/winter of ‘98. They video taped their experience making the play which is basically making jokes and insults about the cast and crew participating in a “Roast” style of commentary for their beloved drama teacher, Sue Carruthers. Even Dyl seemed to be fond of “Mrs C.” and made jokes on the Roast about having beers ready and waiting at the after party to which they all knew their sweetheart of a teacher didn’t condone that type of thing. This video clip is mostly silent because the authorities masked out the audio of them chatting since the three mention various people from theatre production to pick on them in a joking fashion. The only part that you can hear that was slapped into this video clip was from a documentary called “The Lost Boys” where you can hear Dylan and Brooks bantering and Dylan jokingly insulting Brooks about how his Frankenstein makeup was a ‘damn good job and he looked uglier than shit’ to which Brooks goes ‘uglier than I usually am”. Then Dylan apologizes profusely. (This is genuine Dylan who is polite and mannerly to a fault who regularly said ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ without thought and also knee-jerk apologized to people like this on a regular bases.) Obviously, the documentary allows us to hear this bit because they want to skew Dylan as that nasty, swearing, insulting killer when the reality of the context is just two old friends having a good time recalling hilarious moments between them from participating in the play.
Do you know why Dylan wore a triple cross? what was the significance behind it?
and another related Q
Do you know what the triple cross means??? I’ve never come across an explanation.
Significance of Dylan’s triple barred Everlasting-Contrast cross
Do you think if Dylan hadn’t gone through with NBK, he would have eventually commit cuisine anyway? Or do you think he would just go to college and grow up and find some sort of contentment with living?
Well, I know how much Dyl looved food and I do believe he liked to dabble in cooking french egg cuisine dishes so just for that sake alone, if he decided not to go NBK, who knows? He might’ve been a master chef on Food Network committing killer cuisine dishes for his own show. 😉
Ahem. Ok, in all seriousness… Dylan was struggling with chronic depression and also was trying to manage it all on his own without reaching out for help, so whatever he decided to do after high school would’ve been likely as much of a struggle for him as high school had been. Dylan might’ve thought that leaving the town that he despised and going to the hot, dry, foreign desert landscapes of Arizona would’ve been that ticket to a fresh start, a way for everything to start looking up for him for once. However, what if things were not going his way – the specific way in his mind’s eye he expected things to go? So, he would still have been susceptible to those impulsive suicidal thoughts whether it be not doing well enough with college grades and still running empty on the motivation or not being able to make new friends the way he hoped to now being in a completely new town where no one knew him or whether that one girlfriend he managed to date five times and finally have sex with decided to friend zone him and date other guys. There’d always be something that didn’t quite turn out the way he’d hope because, hey, that’s just the way life is! And so the question becomes: would Dylan be able to cope and handle those external life struggles living independently from his parents? There would always be something that would test him and given that he was not getting therapeutic help, it is likely that he might’ve made suicide attempts. There comes a point when Dylan’s self-reliance would hit a breaking point and he’d find himself alone in his dorm finding it easier to solely decide all alone to take matters into his own hands and opt out rather than bother anyone about his sadness problems. For Dylan to have conquered the depression he would need to have taken the first step and admitted and confided in someone that he had a problem and he would need to go get help so that he could manage his illness and ways to deal and cope with daily stressors and triggers. So, if Dyl hadn’t gone NBK, suicide was a strong potential outcome without getting the help he desperately needed.
is it possible that Kevin and Byron knew each other, or knew of each other at some point before the shooting? Do you think the Harris and Klebold family ever discussed the shooting and van burglary with each other?
I don’t believe Kevin and Bryon ever associated. They probably knew of one another because of their brother’s friendship but Columbine HS is huge, we’re talking 2,000 plus kids. I don’t think Kevin and Bryon mixed because they didn’t have the same circle of friends. Though the Harris’ and the Klebold’s may have met in a cursory way regarding the van theft with both fathers showing up in court to escort their sons for their sentencing, I do not believe the Harris’ or Klebold’s ever connected to discuss the shooting. It was just far too awkward for them to manage. I think at a certain point they should have made attempts? I believe this would have helped both of them with the healing process to commiserate about their common ground over their sons as well as the mutual isolation as outcasts among other people. However, the two families never seemed to manage the courage to reach out to one another over the past sixteen years. And at this point, it would probably seem like reopening major wounds though, still, I feel it would ultimately be good, a cathartic release for both families.
Can you show us how Zach Heckler looked? (besides his yearbook photo because in his yearbook photo he looks completely different from his class of 99 pic where he’s with brooks, eric, and Dylan with a gun stance? And was he a tall guy and did he wear trench coats?
This question got asked before so I’d posted a montage of Zack photos here
This is Zack circa 2006ish in his mid twenties. I don’t think Zack was particularly tall. I’d say probably 5′11 – 6 ‘ at the most? He’s much more stockier in build than say Dylan (6′3) and Brooks (6′5) who are quite tall by comparison with those long, skinny physiques (see side-by-side comparison below). Despite Zack being best friends with Dylan and a tenuous friend of Eric’s, he did not feel the need to participate in the trench coat look. Of the three boys, he was the ace computer wizard and probably taught Dylan a lot of stuff as well as how to do the sound and light tech stuff in theater. Zack became President of
Aspire Technology Solutions, Inc. in Denver, CO. (I’m spelling it “Zack” unstead of “Zach” because this is how Dylan spelled the short version of his name.)

Is there any more about Devon? She seems really intelligent and kind :)
Devon’s ‘Art from Ashes’ 10th Anniversary 2014 Speech – This is her most recent commentary, a wonderful example of her intelligence, wisdom and kindness. Devon really does get the full picture simply because she was caught in the middle, friends with the killers, ‘best friends’ with Dylan and friends with the victims (including Rachel) of those killer friends of hers. Ugh. How does one even comprehend that and reach a resolve? Quite a very odd uncomfortable place to be. But she has managed to grapple with all of it over the years and maintain a very healthy, unbiased perspective that stems from love and understanding as result of being smack dab in the neutral that is ‘Switzerland’.

What was going on between Robyn and dyl. They were just friends but then I read he liked her, and then I read she liked him. Then why weren’t they together. I’m so confused 😬
Robyn and Dylan were only ever friends – nothing more. I pretty much mention this in a few previous posts from this past month. Please check the archive for those posts. 🙂
What were the gloves eric and dylan shared made of
Can you elaborate on Dylan’s fetishes (the bondage and feet)? Did he ever say more about it besides just saying he was into it?
Mentioned here.
