Adam Kyler, sophomore during the 1998-1999 school year. He was in the cafeteria before the massacre started, at the same table with Kyle Velasquez (who apparently went to the library afterward, where he would be shot to death by Dylan)….

Great post! It’s been speculated on a Columbine forum whether Dylan had some sort of subconscious issues with special needs kids and finding some sort of perverse enjoyment out of making them an easy target to victimize. (His first pick off in the library was Kyle Valesquez, who supposedly did not have the sense to hide.) The speculation is that Dylan somehow felt slighted/ cheated by his mother’s career which focused her attention specifically on special needs students and so there was, on some level, a sort of competition for focused attention. I’m not convinced and it’s a slightly convoluted theory. Of course, regardless of any deep seated issues Dylan may have had, there isn’t ever really a good justification for bullying and screwing up someone else’s self esteem. In short, you could simply say he displaced the bullying that was dumped on himself by going after those he considered more vulnerable and easy to attack (additionally, certain girls in gym class and teachers that were easily frazzled.) Thankfully, Adam had Rachel’s random act of kindness extended to him to keep him afloat and break the perpetual cycle!

Why I think it was Dylan who wrote „Just a day“:

There is a lot of speculation about who of the boys wrote that small piece “Just a day”. It even does not seem clear where it was found- some sources say it was found among Dylan’s school works. Other sources say, it was found on Eric’s Computer.
Most sources seem to come to the conclusion, that it was Eric who wrote it. I think that this is very unlikely and I want to explain why.

At first, whoever wrote that piece used the word “halcyon” on one occasion. As most of you will know, this word was fundamental to Dylan’s worldview and his fantasies about other dimensions and realities, where he hoped to find pure bliss and happiness.
Eric, however, does not use this word a single time in his writings. Not even that, but the whole concept of what this word represents, is absolutely contrary to his worldview. Eric celebrated war, destruction, animalistic instincts and brutality. It is hard to see why he should use a word that means something like “peaceful” in a positive way.
Another clue is that whoever wrote that piece does describe his brother in negative terms:
“I always remember my brother trying to impress everyone, and myself thinking what a waste of time that would be”.
Despite that fact, that both had older brothers, only one of them is known to talk about his sibling in negative terms: Dylan. Eric reportedly admired his older brother Kevin, went to his football games and if I remember correctly than he named his brother as the family-person which was most close to him, when asked after getting caught for the Van Break-In.
Dylan however told the authorities, that he didn’t have much to do with his brother anymore, since Byron got kicked out of home. And he openly judged his brother during angry rants during the Basement Tapes, telling that Byron and his friends once harassed him. Thus, the comment does not seem like anything Eric would say about his brother, but it perfectly fits into the negative attitude, Dylan had towards his brother.
The next hint is only a small detail, yet still of importance: whoever wrote that text repeatedly uses an “&” instead of “and”. Guess whose writing style is known for that? Exactly, it’s Dylan.
Also noteworthy is the concept of nature that the text expresses. The whole scenery is described as beautiful, majestic and peaceful. The writer makes detailed mention of the water and its qualities, revealing an almost mystical understanding of nature.
Now, does this fit how Eric or Dylan did understand nature? Here is, how Eric did understand nature: “the few who stick to their natural instincts are casted out as psychos or lunatics or strangers or just plain different. crazy, strange, weird, wild, these words are not bad or degrading. If humans were let to live how we would naturally, it would be chaos and anarchy and the human race wouldn’t probably last that long, but hey guess what, that’s how it’s supposed to be!!!!!”
Eric does not use the word “nature” or “natural” a single time, without putting it in a connection with war or destruction. Even when he writes about his childhood times, where he played in the woods, he turns the essay into a description of him participating in a war.
Dylan, however, was obsessed with peacefulness, bliss and beauty. He desperately longed for such an existence. He also had a very mystical understanding of the world, as we exemplarily can see in the way he used symbols like the Chaos-star, the Thought Boxes etc. as representations of forces.

If we consider all of this- does it seem likely that Eric wrote this essay? I don’t think so.

I completely agree with you and for all the well thought out reasoning you’ve stated. Halcyon is a pretty key word that sticks out. We pretty much know Eric is not big on unusual word flourishes in his essays – he’s pretty straightforward. Yes, sure, the boys both knew the song ‘Halcyon, On and On’ from Orbital but this word is only ever exercised by Dylan. If you read all of Eric’s essays, his writing style doesn’t boldly interject the use of unusual vocabs. Additionally, the slam dunk for me, is all the passive-aggressive use of expletives like ‘a$$holes’, etc. Particularly if this is a school essay, we all know Dylan always got himself in trouble for having selective amnesia over the fact that teachers dislike the use of curse words in school assignments! Yet, Dyl keeps right on doing it. Kind of a: “Oh, yeah. I’m sorry Mrs. Kelly, I forgot about that – FUCK!” That’s part of his personality charm. 😉 Even if this was a doc found on Eric’s computer, it’s not a deal breaker to conclude that it simply must be Eric’s. it could easily imply that Dylan completed a short assignment on his friend’s computer while spending time over his friend’s house. Of course in the ’90s, kids didn’t have their own laptops or devices to work on homework at friend’s homes.

Rachel performed another mime in the 1998 talent show. As Rachel started her performance, the audiotape sound became very garbled, and the music stopped. The audience started looking around to see what was wrong. Meanwhile on stage, Rachel kept right on with her mime. It was probably at least two minutes before the tape was fixed and the music came back on. Since Rachel had been keeping the song going in her head, when the tape restarted, she was in perfect step. She was miming the Ray Boltz song “The Hammer.” It is about a Roman soldier who witnesses Jesus’ crucifixion and asks the question, “Who would nail this innocent man (woman?) on a cross?” In the song, he comes to realize it was his own sin and the sins of the world that crucified Jesus. Ironically Dylan Klebold was in the sound booth that night, and he was the one who eventually fixed the audiotape. Once again, through Rachel, the gospel had gone forth even to her killer.

Q – Beth, you write, Rachel had a growing sense that she did not have long to live. We picked up only inklings of this while she was alive. What did you pick up? What did she tell you? Did she talk about some of the things that were going on in Columbine?

A – No. It was nothing like that. It wasn’t until hind sight that we actually saw that she was saying things that would later come true. She would say things like she was never going be married. She would say things like, I don’t ever think I’m going to get old. That kind of thing. And of course when you’re hearing that, it’s just like teenager talk. You’re like you just don’t want to get old. Really I think there was something in her that just gave her that feeling that that was true about her life. Then of course her writings substantiated that.

Q – Didn’t Dylan have a crush on Rachel?

A – He actually did at one time. In fact, even Judy Brown collaborated that to me a few weeks ago when I met her at an anniversary dinner for Columbine. Dylan had had a crush on her. I don’t know where that went. Rachel had actually tried to be friends with Dylan, not in a boyfriend-girlfriend kind of deal. She was a kind person. When everything went wrong for Dylan, I guess he kind of turned on her. Rachel was known as a Christian at Columbine and there was a lot of hate about Christians and Jews. They fed their anger. They had to keep it at a level and to do that they fed it through books, games, movies, very violent sources. They kept up this mock bravery or toughness and they fed one another with it. They had to keep that anger at a certain level in order for them to seed the plan they did. I know when Rachel was performing one night at a variety show, her tape got garbled. It was Dylan in the sound booth. I was told that he was so anxious to get that right because she was performing a mime during the tape. I think it was kind of a love-hate thing. He hated her for her Christian point of view, but, at the same time he was drawn to her because she was a kind person.

Well, of course, just because the two mother’s corroborate that Dylan had a crush on Rachel doesn’t necessarily give it more credence. However, to me, it is interesting to speculate about that distinguished “R” heart on Dylan “Likes and Loves (all the same to him) List”. And, yes, certainly, the “R” could easily have been Robyn as a fond like/love. Hell, some have pointed out Reb. Sure, why not – brotherly love then? 😉 ) The length of the scratched out, redacted name seems to fit the length of ‘Rachel Scott’ rather than the longer character length of ‘Robyn Anderson’. But, meh, that doesn’t really prove anything either. At any rate, Dylan knew Rachel and he anxiously worked like mad to help her correct the audio in her play. That part is a fact. Even if he no longer ‘liked’ her at that point, for her religion or whatever – for what it is worth, it was random act of kindness on his part to do damage control and help her out.

Whenever I listen to “Who Am I Living For” by Katy Perry, I think of these two – both stating their individual missions and purpose as each plays a resolved role in their fated destiny. Columbine, being an, almost, spiritual-like war ground in which, Rachel as the first sacrificial victim, sparked the chain reaction. The grave impact of that day weighs heavily echoing on in the many years thereafter, like a giant stone plunged into a vast pond, with ripples continuing to echo outward even to this day. The repercussions from ‘It’ transformed universal consciousness like a sleeping giant. The two huntsmen, suiting up for the final battle, looking for sacrificial retribution could have been thwarted. There were several signs, several ways in which the warnings of impending doom could have been stopped – and yet, it was somehow meant to occur, to play out, for the greater purpose within the universe. Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes to transform the wrongs of the past – a better future paved with a more mindful sense of awareness, compassion and kindness.. Yes, of course, we have a veeeeery long way to go with all of this but Columbine was the impetus that veered us on to this new path. It was the ultimate wake up call. Dylan surrendered to Fate “Fate is my only Master.” as to whether he would partake in a Two Man War known as ‘Judgment Day’ and Rachel surrendered to her God, begging to be used for a great purpose that would reach the world. Both’s message were received and heard by the world.

Anyway, I suppose this post is sort of a ‘Happy Belated B-day’ to Rachel Scott in some odd sort of way. 😉

This is actually Dylan. You can tell by the strong projection and resonant tone.. Eric does laugh in the Carwax vid but his laugh sounds a bit like a chipmunk. lol.

Dylan puts on his long black trench coat and says “I’m fat on this side” and talks about how he looks “..fat with all the stuff on.”

Dylan tries to toss the Tec 9 into his hand from the position where it was hanging on the sling. The coat prohibited him from doing that
Dylan then says “I’ll have to take the coat off” He begins complaining about how he doesn’t want to take his coat off and states “I like my coat.”

Why would Robyn Anderson buy three guns?

She was exceptionally bright, taking tough classes such as calculus and Advanced Placement English at Columbine High School.

She had a 4.0 grade-point average and was in the running to be Columbine’s valedictorian, said her best friend, Tiffany Burk, 18, a senior.

And she was identified this week as the gun-buying prom date of Dylan Klebold, 17. He and his pal Eric Harris, 18, used the guns to kill 13 people and themselves in the April 20 Columbine High School killings.

On Wednesday, authorities narrowed the connection between Anderson, 18, and the guns.

“We have confirmed at this point that she did buy three weapons, those being the long guns — the two shotguns and the rifle,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Davis said.

Anderson was in the school parking lot when the shooting started, possibly headed to lunch, Burk said. Anderson told her friend she spent the aftermath of the shootings huddled in her car for three hours.

“She was actually in the parking lot underneath her car seat because she heard firing,” Burk said.

Anderson lives with her mother. Her parents are divorced and she has two older sisters, one a 1997 Columbine graduate who is now in college.

Burk said Anderson and Klebold were pals, confidants. Their relationship was close, but not romantic, she said.

“They were incredibly kind to one another. Dylan had tons and tons of respect for Robyn,” Burk said. “She was someone who he confided in.”

Anderson and Klebold joined several couples in a limousine for Columbine’s April 17 prom.

Anderson told her friend they had a “wonderful time … and Dylan was being a little more chivalrous that night,” Burk said.

Burk, who’s been close friends with Anderson since the two met in freshman geometry, said she cannot fathom that Anderson knew of the deadly plans by Klebold and Harris when she purchased the guns.

The shootings left her unbelieving, Burk said. “She was very shocked, completely stunned.”

She recalled Anderson and Klebold joking around about how “the jocks think they owned the school.”

Other students say Anderson is shy, but pleasant. Normal. Now that authorities have named her as the source of most of the firepower, she has vanished.

So far, police say, she’s a witness, not a suspect.

Supplying guns used in a killing is a violation of federal law. If the buyer knew the guns were going to be used in a crime, it’s a felony.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said that federal and state prosecutors would work to determine how to handle possible charges against Anderson, but nothing is final.

Troubling questions remain about how much Anderson knew.

In Columbine’s senior class photo, she and Klebold have their arms around each other’s shoulders, laughing wildly.

Stephanie Hommel, a junior, was in German class with Anderson and had shared hotel rooms with her during a class trip to Munich in March.

“She didn’t strike me as a person who would go out and buy guns,” Hommel said.

Anderson and Hommel joked around a lot on the trip, talked about everyday stuff like boys.

John Savage, a senior who narrowly escaped being shot that day, also knew Anderson. “She was always pretty nice to me,” Savage said.

“I don’t think she would have bought them (the guns) if she would have known what they were going to be used for,” Savage said.

Why?

“I don’t think she hated Columbine.”

Anderson’s mother, Kay Anderson, teaches elementary school for Littleton Public Schools, spokeswoman Karla Langton said. Langton refused to identify the school, on advice of an attorney.

Neighbors of the Andersons say she and her mother had lived in their home a year or two.

Residents mostly knew of the family because parents of young children got angry about teens, especially boys, speeding in and out of Anderson’s driveway.

Other than that, there was never anything suspicious about her, they said.

“She looks as normal as any teen-ager, long blond hair, whatever,” said a neighbor who asked not to be named.
