“The framework of society stands above & below me. The hardest thing to destroy, yet the weakest thing that exists. I know that i am different, yet i am afraid to tell the society. The possible abandonment, persecution is not something I want to face, yet it is so primitive to me. I guess being yourself means letting people know about inner thoughts too, not just opinions & fashions. I will be free one day, in the land of purity & my happiness, I will have a love, someone who is me in a way. Someday… Possibly thru this life, maybe another, but it will happen…”

Nice set. The six sides of Dyl. Too good to not post. 🙂

La vie serait-elle amusante sans une pincée de mort?

What fun is life without a little death? — As translated in La logique du massacre: Derniers écrits des tueurs de masse, which translates nearly the whole of Dylan and Eric’s (released) diaries into French.

Since this is Bastille Day, I think it’s kind of appropriate. Also, it’s Brooks…

vita-pulcherrima:

it’s interesting what brooks brown said about dylan, how it really wasn’t adorable how insecure/awkward he was— it was painful

and i think a lot of people forget this sometimes? people want to make dylan out to be this cute lovable guy but he really, truly hated himself and i know how that looks,…

Some good points. Though, I don’t think there’s any delusions that Dylan was only a smidge shy on the surface and warmly adorable just underneath. Not by a long shot: it was crippling social inhibition and internal, chronic feelings of being completely ‘unsalvageable.’ There’s plenty of people that can relate. But I think what resonates and makes people smile half wistfully amused actually IS the awkwardly painful shyness and his groping attempts to compensate, for example, to act the part of a cool, smooth character in which he then becomes self conscious and screws up his lines. It’s that trying really, really hard and failing because, inside, he knows he’s not that by a long shot. His foibles are endearing; it’s not that he is a charismatically cute, ‘smooth’ shy guy. Brooks just missed it entirely.

I wish there was more audio of him talking in their videos, like the one of Eric in the cafeteria.

Fucking Interview

After Dylan worked at BlackJack Pizza in ‘97 and then quit (I’m guessing maybe because he got chewed out for bringing in a pipe bomb?), he worked for Computer Renaissance. And in between that time period, he had a short stint at Albertsons grocery store as a customer service clerk (you can just picture that, can’t you? 😉 ) The mentioning of the ‘fucking interview’ during late ‘97 in his day planner must have been his application for Computer Renaissance, apparently his ticket out that hell hole grocery store.

I noticed that he mentioned “Fried shit” on December 4th. At first, I thought it read “Friend shit” but then vacillated on what that could mean. This is all just speculation here on my part, but.. I thought perhaps that it wasn’t just sloppy spelling of the word “Friend” but deliberately arranged as “Fried”. Just maaybe Dylan thought his interview and job with Computer Renaissance was a slam dunk, so he pulled a last “revenge” prank on Albertsons, as mentioned in his yearbook note to Nate Dykeman, in reference to putting refried beans (aka “fried shit” in Dyl shorthand) in the store’s toilet to piss off his supervisor, Connie. I could be totally off base but it’s an amusing thought anyway!

Hmm.. I wonder what sort of half arsed-questions Dyl came with up with for that (fucking!) interview on December 10th. :3

UPDATE Per Sue’s book: Dylan began working at Albertson’s “roughly a week after the theft”. The van theft happened on the evening of January 30th. This places his job at Albertson’s grocery store the first week possible second week of February 1998. This roughly dovetails with my initial speculation that he worked at the grocery store within the Jan/Feb timeframe. It has now been confirmed by Sue as Feb ‘98 and it probably lasted only a month – if that. Based on Dyl’s dayplanner entries above in Dec ‘97, it would indicate that he was interviewing for Albertsons and not Computer Rennaisance as he wasn’t able to land his dream computer job until August ’98.
It’s interesting too that Dylan uses Rich Long, the Computer teacher at Columbine High. Rich lost his trust in Dylan after he hacked the locker combos in Oct ’97 and barred Dylan from working the computer lab ever again. Can’t imagine a reference from his soured teacher would’ve been very complimentary.

Good Friends and Best Friends Kindred Spirits

I just thought it interesting to note that Dylan remembers Zach Heckler’s birthday in his day planner, enough to mention it – but seemingly not Eric’s.

Dylan writes about Zach Heckler in his journal 7/23/97:

“My best friend ever: the friend who shared, experimented, laughed, took chances with & appreciated me more than any friend ever did has been ordained … “passed on” … in my book. Ever since (Devon) (who I wouldn’t mind killing) has loved him … that’s the only place he’s been with her …if any- one had any idea how sad I am … I mean we were the TEAM. When him & I were friends, well I finally found someone who was like me: who appreciated me & shared very common interests.”.

Dylan writes about Eric Harris in his Diversion Questionnaire Jan ‘98:

“Friends for about 4 years, (scribbled out ? was he considering the word ‘best’ and decided against it?) very good friends.”

burnandraveatcloseofday:

“Life Is Sweet (Daft Punk Remix)” by the Chemical Brothers.  This is another song from the album Exit Planet Dust (1995), remixed by Daft Punk, and also doodled in Dylan’s planner (JC-001-026462).  This was long, long before Daft Punk became famous on their own with songs like “Get Lucky” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” (sampled on Kanye West’s “Stronger”).

Ashamed

Dylan and Eric were arrested, charged with theft, criminal mischief and criminal trespassing and released them to their none-too-happy parents.

Dylan was so ashamed he didn’t even tell Nate Dykeman, who found out about it third-hand.

“I said, `Is this the reason you can’t go out?’ and he got all red and told me he didn’t want to talk about it,” Nate said.

Fatal Friendship – The Rocky Mountain News – August 22, 1999

———-

Sue Caruthers had Dylan Klebold working for her on several play productions. She described him as being very efficient. She said that upon one occasion she remembers that he didn’t show up for the production he was supposed to be at for rehearsals and that she asked a friend of his, Zach Heckler, where he was. Zach Heckler told her that Dylan Klebold had been in an anger management class. She asked Dylan Klebold about this when he came to the class and he didn’t wish to provide any details other than he’d done something wrong and he had to go to this class. She describes him as being very respectful and courteous, and never showed any disrespect for her or any other faculty while she was around.

Tiffany Lien, Columbine survivor and murder victim at 21

burnandraveatcloseofday:

Wow, this is a depressing story! It’s nearly as depressing as Columbine, in my opinion.

image

Tiffany Lien, a freshman at Columbine High School in 1999, survived the shootings but six years later, in 2005, would be shot dead by her boyfriend/common-law husband as she lay sleeping with her new…

Interesting to note that Tiffany was one of several witnesses that seemed certain the shooter was Robert Perry not Dylan.

These are the consistent descriptors mentioned by such witnesses:

“Lien stated that she has not seen Eric Harris since last semester and that she has never seen Dylan Klebold.

“She believes gunman number one used to be a student of Columbine High School but has since then dropped out prior to 4-20-99 and that she has seen him in the school before.”

“..gunman number one…with dark, long curled up brown hair, down the back and over the ears, with a black baseball hat worn backwards.”

“Witness Lien stated that she remembered that the gunman number had a lot of acne around his mouth and nose area of his face.”

Sadly, Lien survived getting shot at Columbine. However, years later, she became a stripper while in her twenties and ended up being shot to death by a much older, stalker ex-boyfriend.

Dylan’s hands ?? 😉

This post is off the beaten path but I suppose it’s a bit of an addendum to my BlackJack Jason Secor posts.

These Blackjack training videos look to have been made circa early to mid ‘90s. They give an amusingly good idea as to what the job was like for D & E. Imagine them in those dorky Where’s Waldo-ish striped ‘uniforms’ and it will bring you much LOLz.

The old push button phone annoyingly ringing off the hook all day long. Dylan, defiantly wearing his trench over the dork uniform with combat boots tucked half in/out of his pants, quietly but efficiently tossing pizza pie dough to endless Rammstein while dressed-to-code Reb is snarking away at the stupid flippin’ customers, slamming the phone off the hook. Suddenly, a Great Clips chick walks in and Eric transforms into an attentive cooperative worker. Folding cardboard boxes, washing the floors, assembling dry ice bombs, oh, and, yes, planning snippets of NBK – all in a days work! Yeah, you can just kind of see it all, huh..

The Blackjack Pizza that Eric and Dylan worked at was located at 6657 W Ottawa Ave but has been closed down since the tragedy.

In 7:07 of the Driver Part A video, you can see a label for their actual store’s address.

Hmm..could those be Dylan’s hands perhaps? j/k. 😉 These vids were probably made years before E & D started working at BJ. However, some of these interior shots used in the videos could be of the actual location.
