E & D’s creative writing class exercises are always an interesting comparison. The differences in expression and personality really come across.  Eric is blunt and to the point; Dylan paints a comical picture.

Some people have been wondering about the meaning behind Dylan Klebold’s ring. It’s not known for sure the real meaning behind him wearing it ( if there even is one) but here are some facts I’ve found out about black rings that seem interesting enough to mention and could explain why he wore it.

According to gemstone historians, Roman warriors carried onyx carvings of gods into battle. The ancients believed black onyx had the power to protect them from both outside threats and internal conflicts and emotions that could cause them harm or lead them astray. Today, black onyx still carries a suggestion of self-control and strength. Some people believe that a black ring means they are sexual deviants.

Onyx is known to separate. It can help release negative emotions such as sorrow and grief. It is used to end unhappy or bothersome relationships.

Revolving Ring

A bit of a repost from weeks ago..  It seems that Dylan occasionally switched from the usual left hand ring finger (credit to xxunnaturalselectionxx)  to the index finger (of which I tend to confuse the titles of these two fingers ad nauseum.)  In the photo where Dylan is snapping his fingers and whistling, he does have the ring on his index finger  – and – it also looks like he has the ring on his pinky when snapping a photo at prom.  But yes, I agree, that he probably wore it on his ring finger more often than not.

 subcultureofthenight suggested that Dylan’s switching from ring finger to index finger may have been a result of his substantial weight loss over the course of the year. It’s an interesting observation. Until this was pointed out, I simply assumed Dylan permanently wore The Ring only on his ring finger. While researching and observing at bit more closely, I realized that he did rotate the ring at times.   Poor Dylan. The God of Sadness broke his pricey sunglasses and spent the day in a funk. Hopefully, he didn’t come close to losing his beautiful ebony ring as well – all because it was becoming too loose on his spindly fingers. 😦

Dylan’s Personal Adornments

In a small pile close to his body were the: handmade triple barred cross earring, the beaded cloth necklace and a silver colored pocket watch. It would seem that Dylan intentionally removed these items and put them in a pile before committing suicide. They were obviously of importance to him and his family.

On his black gloved encased left hand the onyx ring remained on his ring finger.

These were all important components that represented Dylan Klebold in a very intimate way. He wore them so much, that they were, in essence, him. I long to know more about each and would love to see the silver pocket watch. I like to think that these items are enclosed in the Urn with his ashes residing on his family’s fireplace mantel.
