Dylan heavily emphasized interest in a girl or girls in his journal. He was starved to have a love -.someone that was meant for him, that understood and reciprocated those feelings. He was very elated when Zack Heckler came along; he considered him to be his very best friend since he felt that Zack understood him as a person. It’s possible, I suppose that if a dude came along and hung out with Dylan a lot, shared a lot of personal information with him regularly and eventually tried to make it really clear to him that hey, he had stronger feelings for him besides just friends, Dylan might have been open to that because he was starving for close companionship especially since Zack took up with Devon. (Of course, I am not suggesting here that Dylan viewed Zack romantically just that he felt that their bond as close friends was a kindred one). Then again, maybe not, if he was uncomfortable with just flat out dating, let alone giving himself permission to take things a next step to loving this guy beyond just friends. Part of the problem there too would be the fact of the matter that they were part of a constricted, conservative community and peers in his school were knee-jerk homophobic, including his good bud Eric. If he did so it’d have to be very underground and secret. At any rate, it’s difficult to say one way or the other since Dylan seemed to be dwelling on girls in his journal.
