Only two people were around to hear them though when they came in to commit suicide. It makes more sense because of the number of witnesses that heard it, that it happened the first time they came in.
When the boys first entered the library there were 56 students in hiding yet none of these witnesses reported hearing
“Are you still with me? We’re still going to do this, right?” except for Lisa Kreutz who was the only witness that stayed behind, conscious in the library until the mid afternoon.
Lisa Kreutz along with Valeen Schnurr, Lauren Townsend, Diwata Perez and Jeanna Parks sat at Table No. 2 which was nearby the windows close to the propped open library entrance doors. Yet again, only Lisa reports hearing that question posed by one of the boys while residing at table 2 – not Jeanna or Diwata.
Additionally, the 911 call that was placed by Patti Nielson does not seem to pick up The Question at all The tapes continued to pick up the havoc in the library for another 20 minutes – until all the victims had been shot (unreleased to the public). When the line was disconnected, Nielson said, it wasn’t from her side. That means authorities have a 26-minute taped record of the siege in the library. Had they not lost the connection, they would have heard what transpired at the end of Harris’ and Klebold’s lives.
When the students fled the library, only two badly injured students were left behind in the actual library room: Patrick Ireland, who was unconscious due to sustained multiple head injuries, and Lisa Kreutz, who was unable to move having been shot in the shoulder, arms, hand and thigh. In a subsequent interview, Lisa recalled hearing comments around the time of Eric and Dylan’s suicides. Kreutz lay in the library, keeping track of time by the sound of the school’s bells, until police arrived. She had tried to move but became light-headed. She was finally evacuated at 3:22 p.m. Because Lisa was light-headed it is a very likely that since she was now in shock, dizzy and confused that she was unsure exactly when she heard the boys pose that question and since no one else seemed to have reported hearing The Question too, and also since she was the only one left behind in the library by the second and last time the boys entered, it seems very probable that she heard the boys speak the question while she was trying to stay focused, listening for the school bells to track the time as the boys arrived back to the library the second and final time. Another thing to keep in mind, because Lisa was in shock and dazed, she probably heard all of those things out of context. In other words, she very likely heard them threaten to blow up the library earlier on but jumbled up the sequence of when precisely she heard the boys say The Question. She also heard the boys at one point loudly lament: “I hate this school. This school messed me up” which to me, seems like something they would’ve reserved to say when the two were alone together as they were licking their wounds in failure upon arriving back in the library for the very last time to commit suicide.
