Eh, if condoms broke that much of the time why would anyone bother to buy them?   Of course, the only reason Dyl might’ve ended up with that unlucky box of faulty condoms is clearly because of your insistence of such a plot device question. 😉  Not to mention that similar hypothetical plot scenarios have already been addressed a while ago….

In Dylan’s journal he was talking about his love having the “perfect body” what do you think his version of a perfect body was?

We can’t really define his opinion of a “perfect body” unless we knew specifically who he was referring to now can we? The speculation is that that journal entry “My First Love????” was in reference to Marla Foust. There’s just no way to be sure of that. It is, however, the popular theory. There are no full length photos of Marla from ‘back in the day’ in the nineties (other than her face shot in the yearbook) so it’s difficult to get an approximation of her physique back then. We know that Marla became a model in her twenties and likely had a boob job and so therefore had her original, smaller, more *coughs* normal *coughs* breast size while attending Columbine.  She’s 5’8 and her model specs are here. Again, even though Marla is who many people tend to think that Dylan is referring to, we don’t really know definitely that she is the one redacted in his journal as having a “perfect body” so maybe? Then again, maybe not..

Actually EC Brooks said Dylan told him about the site in March 1998, and his parents called the police that same day. It was after the van break in Dylan told Brooks. Also Brooks knew about the site in 97. His brother Aaron Brown reported it as a “concerned citizen” in Aug 97.

You’re correct that it was March ‘98. Brooks’ timeline is, ironically enough, flaky and glaringly off in his own book but I checked with Kass’ book and elsewhere. That same month on March 25th, a week after Dylan told Brooks about the website, was the court hearing and also the boys’ inception into the diversion program. This would be the beginning of their processing and enslavement to the system. So, I pretty much still stand on what I’d mentioned in my post in terms of Dylan’s mindset at the time he slipped Eric’s website to Brooks. Eric and Dylan were basically still just on the brink of concocting NBK and joining forces to realize it within a year’s time. The arrest happened the very end of January and they had about 1 ½ months before processing into the Diversion program. So, it probably took that Court hearing and the public admonishment from the judge plus their initial first day in diversion, to make them really feel how caught in a vice they were for the entire year. It would’ve incensed their anger and defiance thus their joint plot began, which tightened their bond in a shared secret of retaliation. It’s interesting too upon revisiting this.. that Eric was still producing a hate website complete with death threats right upon the eve of the boys being positioned in the diversion program as juvenile delinquents. The Brown reported it to the police and yet, nothing happened all the while they’re being processed as criminals. I will put in a little notation on that post. Thanks. 🙂

This song “Strange and Beautiful” by Aqualung reminds me of Dylan in it’s slow tempo and dreamy, floaty feeling and it’s perfect lyric of secret, unrequited love.  It’s a little tragic romantic like ‘Beautiful” by Smashing Pumpkins or “Creep” by Radiohead in it’s pining away sentiment.

It captures Dylan’s sense of invisibility to This Girl he loves so much and his longing for her and how “perfect” she’d be for him, his watching and endless waiting from the wings, his fantasizing and dreaming of her from afar and his hopes she will one day wake up to really see him, to realize the depth of his love for her. Infinitely spellbound..

Would Dylan still loved a girl even if she was not as smart as him? What about Eric?

Dylan and Eric could not afford to be that picky.

And it was obvious in Eric’s dating taste, apart from Susan, that that clearly didn’t matter at all. 😉

I tend to think if Dyl was attracted to a girl she already had plenty enough smarts plus everything else going on in her package for him. Being matched in intelligence was not a goal; if anything he saw being too smart a curse. Smart enough was good enough for him.   

Do you think there is a possibility Dylan or perhaps Eric sabotaged the propane bombs on purpose out of guilt, or fear perhaps. Like when Dylan told Brooks about Eric’s plan…..

I highly doubt Eric sabotaged the propane bombs because that was his

pièce de résistance for his entire plan of attack. NBK was centered around those fuckers going off and when they didn’t, he spent the last half of the hour despondently obsessing over them and going back down to the cafeteria trying to make them go off. There is speculation here  regarding the possibility of Dylan sabotaging the bombs. This is based on the fact that Dylan had it in his written notes to “Walk in (the cafeteria), set bombs at 11:09, for 11:17″

so he would’ve had full access to fixing them. Additionally, while Eric was all trigger happy on the lawn of the south-west entrance, Dylan momentarily walked in the cafeteria for unknown reasons. (Though I doubt it would’ve been enough time to fiddle with the bombs).   On the flip side, Dylan had no problem killing random people in that last hour of his life plus he was very eager to end his life and get the hell off the planet  One could argue that what difference would it have made if he had blown up 250+  faceless ‘zombie’ classmates rather than pick off unknown targets randomly with his weapons?   Would it have mattered to him at all really to even have considered weighing the gratuitous deaths of the many versus taken the lives of just a few victims – but just enough though, to satisfy that ‘going out in a blaze of glory’ style before the icing on the cake for him, his suicide?   

Also, to clarify: when Dylan told Brooks about Eric’s website, * it was one and half months after the boys’ arrest for the van theft which happened on Jan 30, 1998.  It’s my feeling that the boys really did not seriously begin to plot and plan NBK until after their arrest but also their entrance into the diversion program. Their court hearing took place on March 25 one week after Dylan told Brooks about the website, and after that they began their entrance into the diversion program. At that particular time when Dylan told Brooks, you need to keep in mind that Dylan and Eric were not as super tight at that point as they would become when they begun to be very vested in their secret designs of going NBK.  Dylan saw Eric’s vitriolic hate and threats on his website directed at Brooks as getting a little out of hand to make even himself uncomfortable – and so Dylan, at the time, still felt obligation towards Brooks as much as he was tight friends with Eric. He felt it important to give his old friend Brooks a heads-up as to what Eric was doing behind his back. So, he took the (great) risk of going behind Eric’s back to notify his other friend.  Dylan having been caught in the middle feeling that onus to protect his old friend from his other friend is not at all related to the theory that Dylan may have sabotaged the bombs from going off during NBK.  These are two entirely separate things. Dylan’s character in one situation does not prove that he is capable of deceiving Eric and derailing the propane bombs from going off. The theory that Dylan might possibly have decided to disarm the propane bombs at the last minute and avoid killing a massive amount of students would be for his own reasons, to which we could only fathom.

did Dylan have to wear glasses? I’ve seen pictures with him wearing them as well as many others without any so did he actually need them or as something he only occasionally wore when needed?

Yes, Dylan did wear glasses upon occasion to compensate for either close-up or distance vision  He seemed to have worn his glasses at home or working theater production after school.  To me this tends to indicate that he likely wore contacts and so when he wanted to give his eyes a rest, he popped out the contacts and wore his beater, nerdy round glasses while unwinding in a casual setting.

Interesting thought: do you think that perhaps Dylan ever SENT one of those letters? The ones in his journal could easily be a draft… And he might not want to talk about an outright rejection at all, even in his journal. If I were the girl, I think that’s a secret I’d keep, not blab to the media… So I wonder if he ever did send them and she just didn’t reply.

I suppose it’s possible but I really highly doubt it. I do think Dylan would’ve alluded something, even if it was vague at best, about the fact that he never heard a peep out of her and his cataclysmic reaction to the rejection. I think it was easy for him to not send the letter so he’d never really have to risk knowing if the outcome wasn’t the one he hoped for in order to preserve his fantasy. This way he could keep her suspended as his potential love in his thoughts with the forever possibility that she felt the same was as he did. It didn’t matter anymore anyway because he was banking on the big reveal to happen for him when he was in the Halcyons. 

Do you think even though they didn’t want kids do you think they still would’ve had them? What do you think dyl would name his kids? What about EH?

If they had made it through the tough patches as young adults, gotten into a relationship and married, suuure, they both would’ve had kids. It’s inevitable.
All teenage boys say they do not want kids. Then their late twenties and thirties hits and well, things change, I guess you could say. Priorities shift.

Violet and Lorelei Klebold   I somehow see him with just two girls he’d dote over. Though for boys, if any..  Quinton and Nicholas Klebold   Three cats and two hamsters. 🙂

Gunnar, Flynn, Jane and Samantha – Eric would have a brood of four-five kids. He’d eventually stop resisting the conservative, republican family culture he was raised in and end up conforming to it.  Lots of dogs.. two big ones and a little spitfire..to start with. 😉

Thank you, for uploading the Andrew Solomon interview. I think he really hit the nail on the head! I can´t help but think that he was the one who finally encouraged Susan to write the book.

And yes, Solomon gently encouraged Sue to launch her book at this time in her life rather than after her death – which is what she had initially intended to do. Once Sandy Hook happened she felt a sense of urgency about coming out of the closet and finally disclosing her side of the story so that she may help play a part in helping parents recognize signs and thus potentially help prevent future school/mass shootings as well as suicides.
